Tattoos By Charlene (TBC) is open to considering barter, swaps, trade-ins, or a combination of barter + cash for selected tattoos, piercings, aftercare, products, studio needs, décor, plants, materials, equipment and selected professional services and experiences.

This is an enquiry-based offer, not an automatic exchange programme. Every proposal is assessed individually and must be accepted by TBC in writing before the deal is finalised or a booking is confirmed.

💜 What makes a good trade?

We are looking for genuine value — not leftovers or hand-me-downs. The strongest proposals are items, services or experiences that are high-quality, useful to TBC, commercially valuable, desirable or reasonably easy to resell.

• 📺 TVs, electronics, gaming equipment, sound systems and useful technology
• 🛠️ Tools, professional equipment, workshop equipment and machinery
• 🏠 Building supplies, renovation materials, flooring, tiles, fixtures, fittings and home-improvement items
• 🧊 Quality appliances and household equipment
• 🪑 Quality furniture, décor, storage and studio/home items
• 💎 Jewellery, watches, accessories and other verifiable valuable goods
• 📦 New/sealed retail products or stock with genuine resale potential
• 💻 Business equipment and professional services such as design, marketing, photography, maintenance or other useful skills
• 🌿 Garden, outdoor and landscaping items
• 🎟️ Gift cards, vouchers, activities and experiences
• 🏨 Holiday accommodation, weekend stays, getaways and travel experiences
• 👶 Quality children's/toddler products and family experiences, particularly new, premium or excellent-condition items with genuine practical or resale value
• 💰 Cash + barter combinations
• ⭐ Other useful, valuable or commercially desirable goods or services you believe may make a worthwhile exchange

These are examples, not a shopping list. TBC may decline any item, service or experience even if it appears above.

💰 How we assess value

We look at fair, realistic current value rather than an inflated original retail price. For used or second-hand items, condition, age, functionality, completeness, demand and actual local resale/trade-in value can all matter.

We may consider what a reputable second-hand dealer, reseller, trade-in business or pawn shop would realistically pay as one reference point — but TBC is not a pawn shop. We do not provide pawn loans, cash advances or collateral arrangements. The barter value is whatever TBC and the client mutually agree to for that specific exchange.

🔎 Inspection, testing & verification

Photos and screenshots are useful for an initial discussion, but they do not replace physical inspection where an item needs to be checked.

• The item may need to be physically brought to TBC before a final value is agreed.
• TBC may test, inspect or verify the item before accepting it.
• Electronics and equipment may be checked for functionality, model, serial number, accessories, battery/charger condition and other relevant details.
• Jewellery, collectibles and valuable items may require authenticity, material, documentation or market-value verification.
• Branded or high-value goods may require proof of purchase, ownership or authenticity.
• If a specialist, jeweller, technician, dealer, appraiser or other third party is required, TBC may require an external evaluation before deciding.

Any third-party evaluation or testing cost will be discussed beforehand and, unless TBC agrees otherwise, is the responsibility of the person offering the item.

Bringing something in for evaluation does not mean TBC has accepted it. It is only an assessment.

🖤 The most important rule: item first, work second

TBC will not perform the tattoo, piercing, supply the agreed service or release the agreed benefit of the barter deal until the agreed barter item is physically in TBC's possession and has been inspected and accepted where inspection is required.

For services offered as barter, the agreed service must be completed to the agreed standard before TBC's side of the exchange is provided, unless a different sequence is specifically agreed in writing.

If an item needs testing, authentication or evaluation, bring it to TBC first. We will do the necessary checks or arrange them and advise from there. No appointment or service date should be treated as confirmed until the barter requirements have been satisfied.

📦 Possession, ownership & acceptance

Physical possession for evaluation is not automatically the same as final acceptance or transfer of ownership. Where TBC accepts an item as the agreed barter consideration, the written agreement will record what is being exchanged, the agreed value, when ownership transfers and what TBC is providing in return.

Once accepted as consideration, TBC may retain the item and proceed with the agreed service according to the written arrangement. TBC may refuse to proceed if the item is not as described, fails verification, is materially defective or otherwise does not meet the agreed terms.

📅 Booking & deposits

• A barter enquiry does not reserve an appointment.
• All normal TBC booking, consent, safety and service requirements remain applicable.
• Where a deposit is required, the normal 50% non-refundable deposit policy applies unless TBC expressly agrees to a different written arrangement.
• A barter + cash deal must state the cash portion and when it is payable.
• TBC may require the barter item to be received and accepted before the appointment is treated as secured.

🖤 Tattoos, piercings & service scope

Barter does not bypass TBC's normal consent, hygiene, anatomy, jewellery suitability, aftercare, design, cancellation or service-scope requirements.

For piercings, the piercer may refuse, modify, postpone, stage or recommend an alternative where anatomy, tissue, jewellery suitability, healing load, client condition or safety makes the requested procedure unsuitable.

For tattoos, final size, placement, detail, colour, cover-up requirements, design work and session requirements must be agreed before the service begins. Additional work, changes or sessions outside the agreed scope may be charged separately unless TBC expressly agrees otherwise in writing.

🚫 What TBC will not accept

TBC will not knowingly accept stolen or unlawfully obtained goods, counterfeit/fake goods, illegal drugs or controlled substances, unsafe or hazardous materials, regulated weapons or weapon components, or anything that creates an unacceptable legal, safety, hygiene or ethical risk.

We may also decline damaged, incomplete, non-functional, obsolete, difficult-to-verify, unsuitable or unwanted items. TBC does not have to accept an item simply because someone believes it has a particular value.

🧾 Ownership, authenticity & legal responsibility

By offering an item, you confirm that you have the legal right to offer or transfer it. TBC may request identification, proof of ownership, receipts, serial numbers, registration details or other reasonable documentation. If an item is later found to be stolen, counterfeit, unlawfully obtained or materially misrepresented, TBC reserves the right to stop the transaction and use any remedies available under applicable law.

🔄 Once the deal is completed

After the agreed barter consideration has been accepted and TBC has provided the agreed service or benefit, the arrangement is not automatically reversible because one party later changes their mind or decides the item was worth more or less. Any return, cancellation, replacement or remedy will be handled according to the written agreement and applicable law.

🧾 Tax & records

Barter is a commercial transaction and may have tax or accounting consequences. TBC may record the agreed value and keep relevant transaction records. Each party remains responsible for its own tax and legal obligations and should obtain professional advice where necessary.

⚠️ Important TBC terms

• TBC may accept, reject or negotiate any proposal at its sole commercial discretion, subject to applicable law.
• No employee, client, friend or third party may promise acceptance of a barter deal on TBC's behalf.
• Nothing is binding until the agreed arrangement is confirmed in writing by TBC.
• Bringing an item for inspection does not guarantee acceptance.
• TBC may pause or cancel a proposed deal if verification, testing or evaluation raises concerns.
• TBC may withdraw or change the barter offer or the types of items/services considered at any time.
• Nothing on this page excludes or limits a right or protection that cannot lawfully be excluded under South African law.

2. Send clear photos/videos if relevant.
3. Give the brand, model, age, condition, specifications and accessories where applicable.
4. Tell us what you believe it is worth and why.
5. If it is a service, explain exactly what you will provide, what is included and how long it will take.
6. Tell us what TBC service/product you want in exchange.
7. Tell us whether you are proposing barter-only or barter + cash.
